UnitedHealthcare pulling out of California PPACA market

Authored by Bukaty Companies on June 13, 2016

    Another one bites the dust.

A leading insurance company in the U.S., UnitedHeathcare, recently announced that it will no longer be offering plans within California's insurance exchange. The insurance powerhouse continues to withdraw its reach and now plans to only offer services in 6 of the 50 states. New York, Nevada, and Virginia will receive UnitedHealth plans, while Florida, Georgia, and Illinois will receive limited plans from their subsidiary, HarkenHealth. Even though their health plans-individual and small group- were a fraction of the companies' multi-billion dollar business, the losses proved to outweigh the profits.

For those of us in Kansas and Missouri, we are left to look elsewhere in the exchange market.

The leading carriers within the KS/MO marketplace are:

    • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City
    • Coventry Healthcare
    • Humana
    • CIGNA Healthcare

Open enrollment begins this November 1 and ends January of the following year. The deadline to enroll for January 1, 2017 coverage is December 15, 2016. Unless you qualify for a special enrollment period, missing the deadline means you will be unable to enroll for coverage until the following Open Enrollment period.

Bukaty Companies has a variety of carrier options available with state-of-the-art benefit and enrollment solutions.

November will be here before you know it, so don't delay when considering your enrollment options. If you don't want to navigate the Marketplace on your own, our Kansas-City based enrollers are certified and licensed to help you find the best coverage for your budget.
