Blue KC announces Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute contract ending

Authored by Bukaty Companies on July 9, 2024

On September 17, 2024, Blue Cross Blue Shield (Blue KC) plans to end its contract with Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute (KCOI), effectively removing KCOI from all of Blue KC’s in-network provider lists. Blue KC began notifying affected groups and members last week. While network status for providers at the facility will not be impacted, members may have to switch providers to avoid out-of-network facility charges.

Blue KC cited payment rate disputes for physical therapy services provided at locations other than the main KCOI hospital as the reason for the contract cessation. Members with out-of-network benefits may seek services at KCOI but could end up paying more due to balanced billing and increased cost sharing.

Members who received care at KCOI within the past 12 months and members who recently visited a provider operating out of KCOI will be contacted by Blue KC. For further clarification members can contact the customer service number noted on Blue KC member ID cards.

Should Blue KC and KCOI reach a resolution, Bukaty Companies will issue an updated communication. For more information, contact your Bukaty benefits consultant at 913.345.0440.
