Blue KC to begin coverage for 3D mammograms

Beginning July 1, 2018, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) will provide coverage for Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), also called 3D mammograms. This change means that DBT will no longer be considered “investigational” in the area of breast cancer screening and diagnosis.

This implementation will affect all Blue KC plans subject to Blue KC’s medical policy. The cost for these services will vary depending on each member’s individual benefit plan. If the member’s plan must meet Affordable Care Act preventive care requirements, then 3D mammograms are covered free of charge as long as the service is through an in-network provider.

Because 3D mammograms will be treated as traditional mammograms, they will abide by many of the current benefit rules. For example, if traditional mammograms are 100 percent covered, 3D mammograms will be too; and if traditional mammograms are covered at plan cost sharing, then 3D mammograms will also be covered as such.
