Federal income tax filing due July 15

Written by Bukaty Companies | April 7, 2020

The Treasury Department and IRS announced that April 15, the traditional federal income tax filing due date, is extended until July 15, 2020, amidst the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. This is an automatic change for all taxpayers, including individuals, trusts and estates, corporations, non-corporate filers, and those who pay self-employment tax.

This unprecedented extension means taxpayers may also defer any federal income tax payments from April 15 to July 15 without penalties or interest. The July 15 deferment is automatic, and no extension paperwork is required unless a taxpayer needs additional time to file following the new deadline.

Despite the date change, the IRS still encourages those who are due a tax refund to file electronically as soon as possible to ensure a timely refund. For more IRS COVID-19 news, visit their dedicated coronavirus updates page.
