    New Form I-9 released

The U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) published a new version of the Form I-9. The form, with a revision date of 07/17/17, will be mandatory as of September 18.

The new version reflects subtle changes to the form’s instructions and the list of acceptable documents employees can provide employers to verify identity and employment authorization.

The revisions to the form relate to USCIS's List of Acceptable Documents to reflect the most current version of the certification or report of birth issued by the U.S. State Department.

Another change introduces the adoption of a new name for the Department of Justice’s Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices to the Immigrant and Employee Rights Section.

Although the form’s changes are minimal, failure to comply by the September 18 deadline can result in costly fines. Form I-9 violation fines were increased last year.
