Federal rate remains at $7.25; KCMO wage dispute unsettled
The federal minimum wage (for non-tipped employees) remains at $7.25 for 2017, however, Missouri has adopted a higher minimum wage of $7.70 for next year. When the state minimum rate is higher than the federal rate, employees must be paid the higher amount.
Employers subject to Missouri wage law must post an updated summary of the laws and regulations. The posting should be placed in a conspicuous place within in the workplace accessed by employees.
Kansas minimum wage continues to mirror the federal rate.
Some Missouri local jurisdictions support higher wages
Since the summer, the Kansas City, Missouri, City Council has been at odds with the Missouri General Assembly who adopted a law clearly prohibiting Kansas City and other local jurisdictions from adopting a wage rate higher than the state-declared rate. The City Council proposed a minimum wage rate of $9.82 beginning January 1, 2017. St. Louis, Missouri, also was scheduled to increase the minimum wage rate to $10 at the start of the year. The Missouri Supreme Court is expected to rule on the issue. Meanwhile, employers need only comply with the $7.70 state minimum wage rate.
