U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services recently released a new edition of Form I-9 and supporting instructions. The form has an effective date of January 20, 2025, and an expiration date of May 31, 2027.
Other working versions of Form I-9 are in circulation and can be used until their stated expiration date. Expiration dates are printed in the top right corner of the form.
The key changes are
- new language in Section 1, fourth checkbox, now reads “An alien authorized to work,” rather than “A noncitizen authorized to work”;
- revised descriptions of two List B documents in the Lists of Acceptable Documents; and
- new statutory language and a revised Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Privacy Notice added to the instructions.
The noted changes were made April 3 in E-Verify, an internet-based system that compares employee Form I-9 information with records available to the DHS and Social Security Administration (SSA) to give greater assurance that an employee’s Form 1-9 information is accurate.
