UnitedHealthcare (UHC) has released information on how UHC members can obtain over-the-counter (OTC), FDA-approved COVID-19 diagnostic kits to comply with the Department of Labor’s (DOL’s) directive released last week. The DOL requirement took effect January 15.
UHC has established a preferred retail program with Walmart Pharmacy and Rite Aid Pharmacy that allows members with a UHC pharmacy benefit administered by Optum Rx to present their ID card to obtain a COVID-19 test without an upfront cost or prescription from a medical provider. Efforts are under way to add other retail partners to expand access. At this time, reimbursement for tests purchased through retailers other than in-store Walmart and Rite Aid pharmacies require the member to submit a claim form. The maximum reimbursement is not to exceed $12 per test. The OTC COVID-19 test benefit includes up to eight tests per member per month.
Self-funded plans with a pharmacy carve out should work with their Bukaty benefits consultant to establish a reimbursement process though UHC.
UHC will release more details on January 19. Meanwhile, answers to commonly asked questions are provided in a UHC-provided FAQ.
