  • Advocates for employees.
    Managers must find the balance between helping employees understand and accept company policies and procedures and communicating employee requests and concerns to decisionmakers. Great managers listen to learn and share their observed insights to enhance business operations.

  • Is a present leader
    Employees appreciate a manager who leads by example. Managers who don’t walk-the-talk, foster distrust with employees and set the expectation that company policies are only suggestions. Great managers consciously set an example for employees. Being a present leader also means having a clear, intentional, and structured management style.

  • Helps employees succeed
    Building a strong organization starts with managers who are willing to work with employees to help them thrive. Performance evaluations should be conducted annually and allow time for two-way conversations and helpful feedback. Keeping an open line of communication reduces confusion and ensures that employees have access to the tools and knowledge they need to succeed.

  • Knows when to take disciplinary action and does so in a fair, consistent manner
    When problems arise, the goal is to eliminate the problem, rather than the employee. Great managers conduct thorough investigations and make informed decisions before taking disciplinary action. Performance plans or disciplinary action should always be documented per company policy.

  • Creates a compliant workforce
    The alphabet soup of legislation that impacts business operations seems never-ending. Great managers have a command of compliance requirements or know how to access the right resources. From anti-harassment training to having the right policies in place, company compliance should befront of mind.
