Spring brings warmer weather, but it also brings high winds, hail, heavy rain, and the potential for costly home damage. As a trusted insurance agent, our goal isn't just to help clients recover after a loss. It's to help prevent one in the first place.
1. Start from the top
Most spring storm claims begin with roof damage from wind or hail. Before storm season
- inspect shingles for cracks, curling, or missing tabs,
- check flashing around chimneys and vents,
- replace aging roofing materials, and
- clean gutters and downspouts.
2. Secure your exterior
High winds can turn unsecured items into damaging projectiles. Take time to
- anchor or store patio furniture,
- inspect and reinforce fencing,
- ensure garage doors are properly braced,
- seal cracks around windows and doors. and,
- repair loose siding.
3. Manage water around your home
Heavy spring rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems quickly. Protect your foundation by
- extending downspouts at least 3–5 feet from your home,
- confirming the grading slopes away from your foundation,
- testing your sump pump and installing a battery backup, and
- clearing debris from nearby storm drains.
4. Document your property annually
The smoothest claims are the best-documented ones. We recommend
- taking a video walkthrough of your home each year,
- photographing valuable items,
- keeping receipts for major upgrades, and
- storing documentation securely in cloud storage.
5. Address tree risks
Dead or neglected trees around your property increase liability risk. Have trees inspected and remove
- dead limbs,
- diseased trees, and
- large branches hanging over the roof.
