Track COBRA, FSA and HRA deadline shifts

The pandemic interrupted processes globally, and employee health benefits are no exception. Certain deadlines temporarily changed for health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs), COBRA and flexible spending accounts (FSAs).

New deadlines are linked to the end of the Outbreak Period. The Outbreak Period spans from the time the National Emergency began until 60 days after it ends. If the National Emergency ends at different times in different places, we expect additional clarity on varying deadlines.

The tables below summarize the new deadline extensions.

These date changes provide leniency for plan participants and administrators and will also create challenges. The shifts and potentially inconsistent Outbreak Period end dates will make the new deadlines difficult to track.

Employers can better track due dates using a benefit administration system. Additionally, hiring a third-party benefit administrator, if you don’t already have one, could be advantageous during this time to help manage the deadlines.
